In the enchanting land of Iceland, breathtaking natural wonders await at every turn. If you're traveling to northern Iceland with your family, make sure to include a visit to Godafoss, the "Waterfall of the Gods," in your itinerary. Located just a short drive from the charming town of Akureyri, this picturesque waterfall promises an unforgettable experience for both young and old.
Getting There:
To embark on this family adventure, begin your journey from Akureyri, often referred to as the "Capital of the North." From here, you can opt for a scenic drive to Godafoss, which is around 48 kilometers away. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes, offering splendid views of Iceland's dramatic landscapes, including mountains, valleys, and charming countryside.
We arrived in Akureyri aboard the Disney Dream and our party of 24 was picked up just outside our ship by an outstanding team from Saga Travel (www.sagatravel.is ). Our guide, Anton, was probably the best tour guide I have ever toured with anywhere. Godafoss was a great first stop exploring the Diamond Circle of Northern Iceland. We'll write more about exploring the Diamond Circle with Anton in subsequent posts.
Exploring Godafoss:
As we approached Godafoss, our anticipation built, and the sound of cascading water grew louder. Upon arrival, we were greeted by an awe-inspiring sight. Godafoss is a horseshoe-shaped waterfall, standing 12 meters high and stretching almost 30 meters wide. Its name, "Waterfall of the Gods," is derived from a fascinating Viking legend, adding an extra layer of enchantment to the experience.
It is easy to immerse yourself in the beauty of Godafoss by following the well-marked hiking trails that surround the waterfall. These paths offered excellent viewpoints, allowing us to capture stunning photos and videos and to witness the waterfall's power up close. We arrived early in the morning allowing us to enjoy the magic of this natural wonder without crowds. I'd recommend doing the same if possible.
Learn about the Viking Legend:
Godafoss is not only a feast for the eyes but also a place steeped in Icelandic history and folklore. According to legend, in the year 1000, Iceland converted from paganism to Christianity. To symbolize this change, the local chieftain Thorgeir Ljosvetningagodi threw his statues of Norse gods into the waterfall, hence the name "Waterfall of the Gods." This captivating story ignited our curiosity about Iceland's rich cultural heritage.
Capture Precious Family Moments:
Godafoss provides the perfect backdrop for family photographs and cherished memories. Our kids loved exploring the area, feeling the spray of the waterfall, and listening to the roaring sound of the cascading water. The juxtaposition of the lush green surroundings and the powerful waterfall lends to the beauty of this place. The water is a striking blue color, as you can see in our photos, thanks to its mineral content.
Extend Your Adventure:
There is a ton to do near Godafoss! Later in the day we continued exploring the Mývatn area including visits to unique geological formations, such as the Dimmuborgir lava fields, Namafjall geothermal area and the Krafla volcano. We ended our day relaxing at the Forrest Lagoon.
Conclusion:
Visiting Godafoss from Akureyri offers families a remarkable opportunity to witness Iceland's raw beauty and to immerse themselves in its rich history. With its easy accessibility, captivating Viking legend, and stunning natural surroundings, Godafoss promises to be a highlight of your family's Icelandic adventure. So, grab your camera and embark on an unforgettable journey to the "Waterfall of the Gods" - a memory that will stay with your family for a lifetime.
