Welcome to Mickey & Minnie Cove cabanas at Castaway Cay

On our spring 2026 sailing aboard the Disney Destiny, we sailed Concierge and were able to enjoy one of the new Mickey & Minnie Cove cabanas on Castaway Cay. I’ve also experienced several of the original family cabanas, now called Sandcastle Cabanas, on past cruises, so I was especially excited to see how these new ones compared.

Getting to Mickey & Minnie Cove

Let’s start with getting there, because this is one of the biggest differences. These new cabanas are located on the far side of the island, adjacent to Serenity Bay.

You have a couple of options to get there. You can take the tram immediately when you get off the ship and ride it to the family beach tram stop, then transfer to the tram that goes to Serenity Bay where the cabanas are located. From there, once you step off the tram, a Cast Member will greet you and either walk you to your cabana or take you by golf cart and give you a quick orientation.

We chose to take a leisurely stroll to the first tram stop instead of hopping on right away, and this is one of our favorite things to do on Castaway Cay. The path is beautiful and well paved, and sometimes you’ll find character meet-and-greets along the way. It’s also a great opportunity to get beautiful photos with the ship in the background, the colorful umbrellas on Castaway Cay, and that incredible

blue water. Even if there aren’t characters out, the photos are fantastic. This is also a good time to shop, since there are no stores located near the Mickey & Minnie Cove cabanas. If you don’t have mobility issues and it’s not too hot, I highly recommend doing the walk at least once—just be sure to bring your camera and dress for photos.

Arriving at the Cabanas

Once you arrive in the cabana area, you’ll immediately notice how different this section feels. There’s a dedicated bike rental area just for cabana guests, and nearby is Hangar 98 BBQ, a restaurant exclusively for guests staying in these

cabanas. The other side of the restaurant serves adults enjoying Serenity Bay.

As you enter, Cabana #1 is on your right, and they continue down the path from there. One of my favorite details is that each cabana has its own character theme and unique color palette. The theming here really feels like an extension of the incredible detail Disney is known for throughout Castaway Cay, and it makes each cabana feel a little more personal.

A nice touch that starts the night before—you’ll receive a fabric wristband delivered to your Fish Extender outside your stateroom door. Disney has moved away from the old plastic wristbands as part of their effort to reduce single-use plastics, and these fabric ones actually make a really cute souvenir.

There are cabanas numbered 1–31, although Disney skips Cabana 13. Cabana 29 is the Grand Cabana.

Inside Our Cabana

We were in Cabana 12, themed to Chip and Dale, with beautiful shades of blue and green with yellow accents. Every cabana has a welcome mat that matches its character theme. Ours had adorable little Chip and Dale footprints. We chose to walk from the entrance to our cabana, but if you prefer (or need it), a golf cart will take you directly to your cabana.

Exploring the cabana itself was part of the fun. There’s a personalized welcome sign with your family name and an adorable welcome mat at the entrance. Inside, there’s a comfortable seating area with a coffee table, upholstered chairs, and a sofa, along with a countertop stocked with a basket of snacks and a fresh fruit plate.

The refrigerator is filled with bottled water and canned sodas like Coke, Diet Coke, and Sprite. This is a real value-add. While fountain soda is included for all guests at the barbecue restaurants on Castaway Cay, bottled water and canned sodas are not—you would have to purchase those if you didn’t have a cabana. Having them stocked and included right in your cabana throughout the day is a big perk.

There was also a tray of cold, wet washcloths in the refrigerator. We used them to clean our hands after applying sunscreen so we didn’t have to go to the restroom, and we also really enjoyed them after bike riding or taking a beach stroll in the heat.

There’s also a small private changing area with a curtain if you want a little privacy. Out on the deck, we had an additional cushioned chair with an ottoman and a large sunbed that could easily fit two adults (or a couple of adults and a child). Just down the steps, there’s a foot wash and an outdoor shower, and to the side, your reserved beach space includes loungers, a hammock, umbrellas, float mats, and inflatable tubes.

Snorkel gear and bike rentals are included as well. The bike rental area is right at the entrance to the cabana area, which makes it really easy to access. However, if your family plans to spend a lot of time doing things like the waterslide, basketball, ping pong, or snorkeling, you will need to take the tram back to the main family beach area. That’s something to think about when deciding which cabanas would be the best fit for your family. The Sandcastle Cabanas on the other side of the island do offer easier access to these activities.

Beach and Water Conditions

The beach in front of our cabana was beautiful, with soft sand and calm water that almost felt like a pool. As you get to the higher-numbered cabanas, the beach opens up into a wider expanse, which is great for families who want more space to spread out. There are also dedicated lifeguard stations just for cabana guests.

Our cabana was close to the beautiful water, but it does sit at a slightly higher elevation. To get to the water, we walked down a short sandy slope, and when we returned, we walked back up. It wasn’t an issue for us, but for guests with mobility concerns or little ones, that incline might be something to consider. The higher-numbered cabanas have a flatter beach area without the slope but they are set a bit farther from the water.

Another thing to keep in mind is that some cabanas have more steps than others at the front entrance. If stairs may be a concern for your family, it’s worth paying attention to this when choosing a cabana. I’ll include photos of each cabana so you can get a better sense of the layout and access. There are also two accessible cabanas (9 & 11) featuring a ramp down to the beach available for guests who may need them.

We also noticed that cabanas 8, 15, and 20 seemed to have more mature trees nearby, offering additional natural shade. We saw guests in those areas really enjoying that extra coverage, which could be a nice factor to consider when choosing your cabana.

We traveled as a family of five—my husband and I, two 15-year-old boys, and our 17-year-old daughter—and we found the setup worked really well. The boys explored other parts of the island and used the bikes instead of waiting for the tram.

Oh Buoy Bar and Hangar 98 BBQ

Lunch was another highlight. We chose to eat at the brand new Hangar 98 BBQ, which has shaded seating and a more relaxed feel than the main beach barbecue. It also offers a few more choices than Cookies BBQ and Cookies Too, the other family restaurants on the island. We especially enjoyed the fries, and as vegetarians, some of us appreciated having Impossible burgers available in addition to the standard veggie burger. Our rotational dining server recognized our boys and brought them steak from the Serenity Bay side. If you have adults in your group, you can head over to the Serenity Bay side for steaks. You can either eat at Hangar 98 or bring your food back to your cabana. When you are finished, you can use the iPad to request tray pickup, which is helpful if you want to avoid unwanted visits from hungry birds.

Mickey & Minnie Cove also has its own dedicated cabana-only bar called Oh Buoy Bar. You can stop by the bar for a drink or order directly from your cabana with the touch of a button. We especially enjoyed having mojitos and virgin strawberry daiquiris delivered right to our cabana.

Choosing the Best Cabana

One thing to consider, especially for parents, is how the beach conditions can vary. On the Sandcastle Cabana side, at low tide, the beach can sometimes be rocky with very shallow water, and you may find yourself walking farther down the beach to find better swimming conditions. Some Sandcastle cabana guests even wear water shoes on that side to avoid the rocks. On the Mickey & Minnie Cove side, while the water can also become more shallow, there is still plenty of water to enjoy right in front of your cabana and we did not experience any trouble with rocky water.

What really stood out to me is how customizable this experience can be. Anyone booking a cabana can choose from the available cabana numbers when booking. Concierge guests can go a step further and request a specific cabana in their Concierge request letter, and a knowledgeable travel agent like myself can help guide that process.

For our family, we absolutely loved Mickey & Minnie Cove. We preferred it over the original Sandcastle cabanas because of the beautiful theming, quieter beach, dedicated restaurant, and extra touches like Oh Buoy Bar and drink delivery.

That said, if we were traveling with younger kids who planned to spend more time on the waterslides, play structures, or snorkeling lagoon, I think the Sandcastle cabanas would still be a great option because they are closer to those activities.

I hope this guide helps you pick the perfect cabana for your family.
